The Hidden Costs of Shipping from Bali That Nobody Puts in Their Quote

A sea freight quote from Bali typically covers the cost of getting your goods from the supplier's location to the destination port. That is the largest single cost — but it is not the only cost. By the time your shipment reaches your door, several additional charges will have applied. Some are disclosed upfront. Some only appear later if certain conditions occur. Here is a practical breakdown.

1. Destination Local Charges (DLC)

Every LCL shipment attracts Destination Local Charges at the port of arrival. These are fees levied by the destination port terminal, the local handling agent, and the container freight station. They cover terminal handling, delivery order fees, security fees, fuel surcharges, and similar port-side costs.

DLC is always separate from the freight quote. It is paid by you or your customs broker at destination. At low volumes — under 3 CBM — most DLC charges hit their minimum thresholds, meaning a 1 CBM shipment pays nearly the same fixed port costs as a 3 CBM shipment. This is why small shipments can feel disproportionately expensive once destination costs are added.

We include current DLC rate sheets for known destination ports in every LCL quote we prepare, so there are no surprises.

2. Import Duties and Taxes

Import duties vary by destination country, goods category, and declared value. In some countries they are minimal for certain product types. In others, particularly for commercial imports of furniture or handicrafts, they can add 5 to 25 percent or more to the landed cost. This is your customs broker's territory — ask them before you order, not after the goods arrive.

3. Customs Clearance at Destination

For sea freight (LCL or FCL), customs clearance at destination is the consignee's responsibility. You need to either appoint your own customs broker or arrange clearance through a third party. This is a separate professional service with its own fees. For FedEx and express courier shipments, clearance is typically included in the freight charge — so this cost does not apply.

4. Inland Delivery from Port to Your Address

Unless you specify door-to-door delivery, a sea freight quote ends at the destination port. Getting goods from the port to your warehouse or home is a separate cost arranged and paid at destination. For large shipments this can be significant — especially if you are not in a major city near the port.

5. Packing Costs

Packing is not included in the freight rate. It is charged separately, after packing is completed, based on actual materials used. For FCL shipments, the historical average is around USD 14.50 per CBM — but this varies depending on goods type, fragility, and whether wooden crating is required. Suar wood, for example, must be crated rather than packed in carton, which costs more.

6. Export Certificates

V-Legal, FLEGT, Phytosanitary, LS Stone, Health Certificate — each of these is a separate cost added to the quote based on your goods and destination. They are disclosed upfront in every PT Intai Rainbow quote. They are not optional. And they are not included in the base freight rate.

7. Marine Insurance

Marine insurance is optional but we recommend it on every shipment. The rate is 3% of declared goods value. It is not included in any freight quote unless you request it. For a shipment of goods valued at USD 10,000, that is an additional USD 300 — modest relative to the protection it provides on a multi-week ocean transit.

8. Demurrage and Detention

If goods are not collected from the destination port within the shipping line's free time window, daily demurrage charges apply. If the empty container is returned late, detention charges apply on top. Neither can be quoted in advance because they depend entirely on what happens at the destination end. See our previous post for the full breakdown on how demurrage works and how to avoid it.

The Full Picture

A realistic landed cost for an LCL shipment from Bali includes: freight, DLC, import duties, customs clearance, inland delivery, packing, certificates, and insurance. The freight rate is usually the largest single line item — but the total of everything else can easily equal it.

We disclose every cost we control upfront. The costs we cannot control — duties, DLC, delivery — we explain and estimate so you can budget for the full picture before you commit.
